The Graphic Adaptation of The Cask of Amontillado
Refugeeland recounts Sacco's experience in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, highlighting the difficult and unpleasant conditions that the Palestinian people were facing regarding the Israeli occupation of Palestine and the Gulf War in the early nineties.Joe Sacco's writing focuses upon the day to day experiences of a Palestinian from an outsider's perspective. His meticulous drawings and eyewitness reporting style combine to create a very compelling and complex visual. Edgar Allen Poe was an American author, living from January 19, 1809 ââ¬â October 7, 1849, Poe is best known for his thrilling and macabre short stories. His final short story, The Cask of Amontillado, is a gloomy tale of murderous revenge, set in the catacombs of Italy, and embedded with symbolism told from a first-person narrative.Poe is a master of allegorical writing, his eerie works compel the reader to explore hidden meanings and ideas concealed within his works. Fantographics Books should strongly consider combining he artistic and literary talents of both Joe Sacco and Edgar Allen Poe to create a graphic novel, the detail filled drawings and intellectually stimulating narrative are guaranteed to appeal to the sophisticated and cultured readership of Fantographics Books. Context: Graphic novels are very important to literature. They can illuminate and expose parts of a story to a reader that would otherwise be hidden within the text.Through the use of visual imagery, the reader can gain more information and decipher parts of the story from a graphic novel that would other wise be assumed or lost in the text alone, such as the author's intent. Graphic novels can also be read by a much larger audience than text stories, this is due to the fact that graphic novels do not solely rely on the text to tell the story. This would be most beneficial for publishing a story in an international market where the story would have to be translated to different languages. The reader can view the image s and interpret the overarching idea of the story without having to read the text.An example of this can be seen in Robert Crumb's visual interpretation of Franz Kafka's short story, A Hunger Artist. The text version of the story was originally written in German, the story was then translated to English and many other languages around the world. Because of the difference in translations, some of the original meaning behind the story may have been lost. The difference between the text and illustrated versions of the story are very noticeable. An example can be seen in the different descriptions of artist himself. In Kafka's version, the hunger artist is described as ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ pale figure with enormously protruding ribsâ⬠¦. nodding politelyâ⬠¦. answering questions with a forced smileâ⬠¦ â⬠(465). In the graphic version of the story, Crumbs depiction is very different from realistic. While it akes no textual description of the hunger artist, it illustrates him as a very disturbed and reclusive man sitting in the back ot an animal cage, ne is not nodding politely or smiling, and he also appears to be on the verge of death (927). The visual depiction from the graphic novel aids in transforming the readers understanding of the text, otherwise the reader may be lost in translation. Why ââ¬Å"The Cask of Amontilladoâ⬠and Joseph Sacco: The descriptive details of a captivating story should be at the forefront of importance when beginning to create a graphic novel. It will eventually become the oundation for the drawings. Without such detail, the graphic novel will be unappealing to most readers, and because of this, the sales of the novel will suffer. For the best possible outcome regarding readership and sales, Fantographics Books should publish an illustrated version of Edgar Allan Poe's short horror-story, The Cask of Amontillado.Poe's dark and eerie narrative depicts the death of a person by being buried alive from a murder's perspective. The story is overflowing with vivd imagery and detail. One such example from the story would be when the main character Montresor begins to lead Fortunato down the stairs into the catacombs of Montresor, ââ¬Å"l took their sconces two flambeaux, and giving one to Fortunato, bowed him through several suites of rooms to the archway that lead into the vaults.I passed down a long and winding staircase, requesting him to be cautious as he followed. We came to the length to the foot of the descent, and stood together on the damp ground of the catacombs of Montresorâ⬠(724). It is clear to see how much detail is bound into one small paragraph, his choice in adjectives and his use of first-person pronouns such s ââ¬Å"Weâ⬠and ââ¬Å"lâ⬠allow the reader to envision them selves in the story, which is an excellent starting point for developing a drawing.Poe establishes a very absorbing and thrilling tale through his use of such imagery, and this is precisely why Fantographi cs Books should strongly consider publishing an illustrated graphic version of The Cask of Amontillado. The artist who could best illustrate the graphic version of The Cask of Amontillado would be Joe Sacco. Joe Sacco has a background in journalistic reporting, a career that requires serious attention to detail to clearly and ccurately relay all of the facts in a news story. In his artistic renderings, Joe Sacco uses an exorbitant amount of detail, which would mesh well with the many details and symbolisms within Poe's writings. One such example would be from Joe Sacco's graphic novel Refugeeland. The illustration in particular is on the second page of the story. It is a two page spread that depicts an arial view of a city. The graphic weight of the image leads the viewer's eye around the drawing, the primary source being Sacco's use of crosshatching to fill the different spacial grounds. It is filled with all of he normal things one would see in a city, such as buildings, cars, and p eople, except every possible space in the spread is filled with the tiniest detail. There are no text boxes or areas for dialogue on this spread, allowing the viewer to contemplate all of the details in the scene. Sacco makes every part of the image important, he doesnt focus on a particular object or person, which allows for different symbols or elements to be incorporated into the drawing.Poe is an author who uses symbolism is all parts of his writings, including character names, settings, colors, and diction. All of these ymbols work together to create an intellectually stimulating story that causes the reader to pause and reconsider certain aspects hidden within the writing. The aura of mystery surrounding the setting of Edgar Allen Poe's writing combined with the first-person perspectives in the illustrations ot Joe Sacco would make this an exceptional pairing for Fantographics books to publish.Preview: In the middle of the story there is a scene where Montresor and Fortunato a re in the catacombs, it is filled with various complex details describing the ambience of the crypt while the men carry out their vain attempt at finding the Amontillado, ââ¬Å"We assed through a range of low arches, descended, passed on, and descending again, arrived at a deep crypt, in which the foulness of the air caused our flambeaux to glow than flameâ⬠¦ the walls had been lined with human remainsâ⬠¦ â⬠(725). In this scene, Joe Sacco will illustrate a two page splash capturing the entire crypt. In this splash, he will capture the intricate details of the catacombs by using hatching technique done with pen and ink. He will show the men descending past the different arches of the crypt from their perspective to make the reader feel like they are walking into the atacombs with the men too. When he illustrates this scene he will use a range of values to establish the fore, middle, and background, this will encapsulate a very important moment in the story that will lea d the reader's eye across the page and provide an opportunity to place symbols that Poe is known for into the drawing. His use of contrasting values in the scene will also convey the tone, which will be very grim and foreboding. Joe Sacco's elaborate adaptation will be ideal for Poe's mysterious short story. Challenges and Unknowns: Although it may be argued that Joe Sacco's background as a Journalist is not ppropriate for such a monstrous fictional tale like The Cask of Amontillado, especially considering all other artistic possibilities, Joe Sacco is the most qualified artist for the Job.Attention to detail is a major necessity for any artist who is thinking about taking on such a detail-rich story like The Cask of Amontillado, which is brimming with symbolism and subtle details. Joe Sacco's background as a Journalist is perfect for The Cask of Amontillado. In his career he focused upon depicting the perspective of the Palestinian people, his eyewitness style of writing is very fit ting for he firsthand narration that Montresor delivers to the readers, which is evidence of Sacco's ability to transform Poe's writing into a graphic novel.Honorable Mention: Another artistic and literary combination that Fantographics Books could have possibly considered would be the pairing of Art Spiegelman, author and illustrator of Prisoner on the Hell Planet, with A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Spiegelman's simplistic illustrations integrated with the magical realism of Marquez would have made for a very interesting combination. Visually, it ould be very stimulating.Spiegelman has a sort of crazed intensity to his drawings, I think it would have been fun to see the bizarre happenings of A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings portrayed in a woodblock printing style. Ultimately, I decided to work with Sacco and Poe because visually and allegorically there is so much more to work with. I enjoy the macabre and thrilling nature of Poe's writing more than magical realism that Marquez is known for. I also enjoy the realistic and complex style that Joe Sacco has as compared with Art Spiegelman, whose drawings are rather flat and disorganized.

Explaining of the Sociological Perspectives in Health and Social Care
There are 3 main perspectives: â⬠¢ The Structural/Functional Perspective ââ¬â Relationship between parts of society, i.e. how aspects of society are functional and adaptive. ââ¬â Macro ââ¬â all aspects of society contribute to the way society functions as a whole. For example the government pays for school teachers and schools and bin collection etc. and in return citizens pay tax. The country couldnââ¬â¢t run without the citizens paying tax. People who believe in this theory believe that member of society have to work together and agree on what will be best for society as a whole. â⬠¢ The Conflict Perspective ââ¬â Competition for scarce resources, i.e. how the elite control the poor and weak. ââ¬â Macro ââ¬â this theory focuses on the negative aspects and conflicted areas of society, the ever changing areas. ââ¬â Society is ever struggling and inevitably changing sometimes it is beneficial and other times it is negative and violent. Inequality is widely spread. To one partner this is the symbol of eternal love.To the other a mere financial expense. â⬠¢ Symbolic/Interaction Perspective ââ¬â Use of symbols, i.e. face to face interactions. ââ¬â Micro ââ¬â how people interact with each other and how they interpret symbols and the details of everyday life. People are seen to attach meanings to symbols, and then act up on these meanings. Words are not static they have a meaning or meanings but the way in which the sender means/says the word could be taken differently by the receiver. Micro ââ¬â level of analysis is of small social patternsMacro ââ¬â level of analysis is of large social patternsThe principal of sociological perspective are:Functionalism- an important part of some accounts of functionalism is the idea of multiple realisation. Since, according to standard functionalist theories, mental states are the corresponding functional role, mental states can be sufficiently explained without taking i nto account the underlying physical medium (e.g. the brain, neurons, etc.) that realizes such states; one need only take into account the higher-level functions in the cognitive system.Marxism- is an economic political theory by which law is considered an instrument of oppression and control, and which the ruling class uses against the working class. Marxism holds at its core a critical analysis of capitalism and a theory of social change. The powerful and innovative analytical methods Marx introduced have influenced a broad range of disciplines.Feminism- has altered predominant perspectives in a wide range of areas within Western society, ranging from culture to law. Feminist activists have campaigned for women's legal rights (rights of contract, property rights, voting rights); for women's right to bodily integrity and autonomy, for abortion rights. A social institution can be defined as an organizational system which functions to satisfy basic social needs by providing safe and s uitable environment. Institutions such as: government ââ¬â public servicesreligion ââ¬â place of worship education ââ¬â schools economics ââ¬â areas family ââ¬â social servicesPrimary socialisation is when you learn the basic day to day norms and values through socialisation. This occurs during childhood. Secondary socialisation is when learning what is the appropriate behavior as a member of a smaller group within the larger society. To learn how to react to the situation you find yourself in. This occurs with teenagers and adults, and involves smaller changes than those occurring in primary socialisation. WHO (world health organisation): definition of HealthHealth is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. 3 main factors that influence healthGeneticsPhysical environmentSocial environment ââ¬â an individualââ¬â¢s choice and peer pressure of ââ¬Ëfriendsââ¬â¢ e.g. doing drugs may b e forced by peers. Home, lifestyle, nutrition and income all affect health also. Concepts of healthPersonal responsibility ââ¬â if you keep yourself clean and tidy (covering up cuts) then you minimize the risk of infection. If you do exercise and eat good food you build up your immune system. Health as the absence of illness ââ¬â if you remain in a healthy state then itââ¬â¢s unlikely for you to become ill. All of these affect a personââ¬â¢s health.Concepts of ill-health Ill health as a disease ââ¬â if a disease can be cured it can only be done by medicine or treatment Ill health as a disorder ââ¬â a disorder can be treated sometimes and can be done by changing your lifestyle or with help from medicine or treatment.Definitions of disability Impairment = a loss or abnormality of physical bodily structure or function, of logic-psychic origin, or physiological or anatomical origin Disability = any limitation or function loss deriving from impairment that prevents the performance of an activity in the time-lapse considered normal for a human being Handicap = the disadvantaged condition deriving from impairment or disability limiting a person performing a role considered normal in respect of their age, sex and social and cultural factors The medical model sees a personââ¬â¢s impairment as the cause of disability. The person with a disability to adapt to society instead of society adapting to them. Socio-medical modelRecognises links between social life and the body. The social model is based on the premise that people are not disabled because of illness or impairment. Instead, they are disabled because of how society is constructed.MEDICAL MODEL SOCIAL MODEL Disability is a deficiency or abnormality. Disability is a difference. Being disabled is negative. Being disabled, in itself, is neutral. Disability resides in the individual.Disability derives from interaction between the individual and society. The remedy for disability-related proble ms is cure or normalization of the individual. The remedy for disability-related problems are a change in the interaction between the individual and society. The agent of remedy is the professional. The agent of remedy can be the individual, an advocate, or anyone who affects the arrangements between the individual and society. Even though people who have disabilities are very different, we are all different ages, races, and different kinds of disabilities, we still share a lot of things in common ââ¬â such as a common history and common experiences of being discriminated against (being treated different because of our disability). MedicalisationTendency of normal life stages, experience and events as needing medical intervention because they are seen to be risky and problematic. Clinical iceberg ââ¬â medical issues, the amount recognised etc. is just like the tip of an ice berg

Experience with Paramahansa Yogananda's Self Realization Fellowship Essay
Experience with Paramahansa Yogananda's Self Realization Fellowship The Lake Shrine - Essay Example On the other side were plaques with inspirational and moving scriptures on them. Statues of Mahatma Gandhi, Jesus, and Lord Buddha were some of the statues in the beautiful garden. The writings on them were uplifting and people gathered around in meditation and repentance. On joining them, I could see love among the people around courtesy of the passed on legends and what came to my mind is the philosophical saying that if you care about others you are doing good to yourself. There was a temple in the garden where individuals were taught about religion and way of living. Looking at the portraits, I came to understand that Yogananda believed that one comes to know God through intuition. All religions were in the temple who called their Gods in different names which made me meditate on the philosophical saying that there exist different Gods in different situations. Evolution and current status of the method Assignment
Evolution and current status of the method - Assignment Example This is mainly because there is no universal method that is appropriate and suitable for all teaching contexts. Rather, different methods will work better, or even worse, in different contexts and equally important, they are all partially valid (Prabhu 161). For instance, the choice of communicative language teaching can be viewed as an ignorant perception that what is suitable for Europe will also be appropriate for Africa simply because it is a documented method. Essentially, that only serves to develop resistance from learners. The approach of method limits the relationship between teachers and theorizers to one in which teachers are not empowered with knowledge, skill and autonomy implying that they may not devise relevant, coherent and systematic methods based on principled practicality (Kumaravadivelu 1994, p. 537). It is further observed by Brown (74) that the concept of method places all responsibility in the classroom environment upon the teacher and effectively barring stud ents from developing their own initiatives and strategies towards learning. Further, the concept also stifles the notion of self-regulation among learners, which means they cannot develop goal-oriented attempts to direct their learning. Rather, what is preferred is pedagogy of practicality that attempts to go beyond the deficiencies that characterize the dichotomies of the theories of theorists versus the theory of teachers by empowering teachers to form their own theories (Kumaravadivelu 2001, p. 541).

Atmosphere Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Atmosphere - Essay Example In addition, the increase on temperature is causing the rise of the water level in seas and oceans. This is basically due to expansion of water systems and the melting of glaciers and polar ice caps (Hegerl et al. 667; Wittoeck). Based on such effects, a number of problematic aftermaths can occur. In the rise of sea level, considerable amount of land area will be submerged specifically in the Pacific and the Maldives. Swamps and estuaries that are rich in biodiversity will be under water permanently, thus, affecting the diversity of the organisms due to the fact that the survival of the inhabitants of such areas will be tested. Similarly, agricultural lands will significantly decrease, thus, ultimately affecting the food supplies. Water supply will also be a problem in the future since higher temperature can be equated to more evaporation, thus, less water in the liquid form (Hegerl et al. 667; Wittoeck). When such problems transcend to social issues relating to the livelihood of the people, chaos can arise specifically due to shortages in water supplies and food. In addition, due to the fact that such problems can affect the organisms of different forms, the only logical action to be undertaken is to cooperate and unite with other nations and people of different nationalities. Every member of the community is needed to practice and promote sustainability. The leaders of nations are needed to initiate actions that can lessen the practices that can result to global warming. One action of importance is the establishment of policies on air quality improvement. In the present period, the consciousness of the people regarding sustainable practices is higher and such actions to improve the awareness of the public can make the economic costs worth it. Included in the policies related to decreasing the effects of global warming is the Clean Air Act that can lessen the emission of gases that can intensify such effects (Hegerl et al. 667;

Moral laws of the jews and gentiles Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Moral laws of the jews and gentiles - Essay Example Paul writes to the Roman ââ¬Å"For when the Gentiles, who have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselvesâ⬠(Roman 2: 14). In Romans 2: 25, He writes ââ¬Å"For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcisionâ⬠(Romans 2: 25). This article explains the moral law between the Jews and the Gentiles, the relationship between Romans 2: 14-15 and 25-29, and the meaning of circumcision in the last passage. The Jews believed they were holy people who are entitled to their privileges by right, while they were rebellious and unrighteous. Paul, however, reminds them that God will judge everyone in accordance to their true characters. Paul advises the Jews to do the things contained in the law by nature. Everybody will be judged by law, and only law observers will be justified. He further clarifies that the same principles applies to the Gentiles too. The Gentiles have not written and revealed laws like the Jews, therefore, they should observe, and abide by the laws contained in the moral principles of the laws of Moses. This implies that they are a law to themselves. Their moral sense and consciences are a law. Paul does not imply that this is the law among the Gentiles, but suggests that the ethics of the law should apply to some of the Gentileââ¬â¢s natural characters. In Romans 2: 25-29, Paul clearly prevents Jewsââ¬â¢ objection, those who set holiness in circumcision, and the logical observation of the law. He highlights that physical circumcision is not of any significance in an individualââ¬â¢s spiritual life, unless its inner interpretation is considered. He condemns those who are circumcised, but do not fulfill what circumcision signifies. According to Paul, circumcision signifies cleanliness of the heart, and adherence to the principles of the commandment of the law. Any uncircumcised man, according to the flesh, who is

The Issue of Marital Rape Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words
The Issue of Marital Rape - Research Paper Example Norms of the current age are based on equality and respect of each other while maintaining the status of equal partners. In legal and social parlance, it was believed that marriage was an institution in which sex between the partners is always legal irrespective of the fact that the woman is ready for it or not. The man was allowed to use her lady and she was bound by his commands. There was no concept of sexual assault and rape in a marital relationship even a century ago. It is pertinent to note here that a law is an off shot of aspirations of the society in which its citizens decide that how they would view a balanced society and on which ground they would like to judge the other and to be judged. Historically, law ââ¬âjust like other segments of the society- was reluctant to admit any interpretation of forced sex in a marital relationship as a rape. Marriage was considered as a license for a man to have sexual relations with his wife even against her wish. But gradually, now society and the law have evolved otherwise. Marriage is a knot between a man and woman, where both agree to live together for love and continuation of their family through their children. Marriage may be defined as ââ¬Å"An agreement made in due course of law where a man and woman reciprocally decide to live with each other during their joint lives, in the union which ought to exist between husband and wifeâ⬠1. Marriage is the relationship where cohabitation is not only for the purpose of sexual pleasure only but also for sharing love and grief, hot and cold, and to work for the comfort of life together. The institution of marriage is the oldest and the only permanent institution of any society. It was there when no other institution was there and till today, all the society posses it in one way or the other.Ã

The main argument advanced by the pro-lifers is that it is immoral to abort because foetuses are human beings. According to the pro-lifers, human life starts at conception and for that reason foetuses should be viewed as human beings, though they have not yet fully developed their vital organs. The proponents of pro-life go on to argue that viewing unborn babies as not being human persons is arbitrary and discriminative (Suzzane, 2003). This is because, for the pro-lifers, it is erroneous and arbitrary to base the definition of human person on the stage of human development that one is at. For this reason, therefore, the pro-lifers contend that unborn babies are human beings, and to abort them, therefore, is morally unjustifiable because it is tantamount to killing innocent human beings. In opposition to this view, the pro-choicers or those who advocate for the right of women to decide on whether or not to abort contend that human life does not begin at conception, but after birth. The advocates of this view argue that foetuses are not human beings since they are not able to survive independent of their mothers; the proponents of this view go on to argue that foetuses and embryos do not have fully developed human faculties, and for that reason they rely entirely on their mothers for survival (Justin, 2012). For this reason, therefore, the proponents of pro-choice argue that women have an inalienable right to decide whether to abort on not. For the pro-choicers, therefore, abortion is not murder

Issues of Gender Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Issues of Gender - Essay Example However, there is a lack of assistance and confidence among the men. As stipulated by Russell Sanderââ¬â¢s essay on power/gender roles, women help each other and do not want to undertake their duties without seeking the ideas of their colleagues. Additionally, Russell Sanders argues that women views men as selfish creatures, since they are not focused on sharing their joy and privileges with women. Women determination and strong desire to succeed are vital aspects that, according to Russell Sanders, contribute to their perception that men enjoy more privileges. For example, college women want to share the power that their fathers once had. Despite the focus of women on becoming successful, gender disparities deterred them to get higher position at working place (Connell 19). Russell Sanders argues that most of the top managers are men who are served by female secretaries and female nurses. Despite the wide range of household chores that women undertake, in the last decades high nu mber of cases that depicted women bullying was reported in many regions globally. In 2012, women have attained political, economic, social, as well as scientific progress that has made them to achieve equal status and equal rights. Political Progress One of the major aspects that have contributed to the success of women in the current political scene is the increment on the number of female legislators in various parliaments world wide. In this way, the issues that affect women are widely discussed, thus, reducing the brutality and discrimination that hindered their development in the last century. For example, in the Nordic region women form 42 per cent of the legislators in the lower house (Fenstermaker and West 57). Other regions that have increased women representation in the law making organs of the government include America, Europe and the OECD countries. One of the major implications of increased women representational quota according to IPU survey is that they act as parlia mentary propellers of gender equality and development. As a result, there is freedom as a key indicator that is used by contemporary economists to measure the development of a country. Similarly, increased women participation in debates has resulted in improvement of women rights as compared to the last centuries when women rights attracted insignificant notice. Economic Progress The extensive campaign to curb gender discrimination in the work places and the adoption of affirmative action in the developed and developing countries has resulted in the increase of the number of female employees. Globally, more than 800 million women are engaged in economic activities. Through engaging in small enterprises, manufacturing and agricultural services women have significantly enhanced the GDP of many countries. This has caused respect from men and support from government and financial institutions. Even though the lack of adequate skills and access to financial resources is a major challenge affecting women in the developing countries, international community, including the UN, has initiated many forums that seek to improve the accessibility of financial resources for women. Canada is one of the regions that has implemented economic strategies to assist women to be economically productive. Through Canada International Development Agency, women organizations, such as Pakistan Mukhtara Mau, have benefited from various training programs on human rights and women economic empowerment. The strategies adopted by USAID in training women are other significant aspects that have contributed to women economic progress. For example, USAID has initiated trainings that are focused at meeting gender based targets in countries, such as Bangladesh, Kenya and Peru.
Dynamics Of International Strategy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3250 words
Dynamics Of International Strategy - Essay Example The world is fast changing and developing into a global village. The inclusion of WTO in the corporate world has revolutionized the situation and competition seeks its unabated boost everywhere. The countries and their companies have entered the international markets in the 21st century along with their magnificent products encompassing individual, collective, domestic, commercial and industrial needs at the global level. The dynamics of international strategy motivate the international companies to alter their strategies according to the changes taking place rapidly around them within the framework of the business environment. Remaining updated with the fast changing world and adopt immediate policy accordingly is key to success for a company under the present state of perfect competition. The strategies of the multinational companies are far more vivid and colossal than those of local and domestic ones. Multinational companies or enterprises refer to the "organizations consisting o f a parent company in a home country that owns relatively autonomous subsidiaries in various host countries. As the multinational corporations enjoy the status of leader of the global market, so they certainly have to undergo high leveled competition in different markets and cultures. Furthermore, the multinational companies to face industrial targeting too. "Industrial targeting", Balls & McCulloch argue, "is the practice of government assisting selected industries to grow by a variety of means."

Customer loyalty programmes in the retail sector
Customer loyalty programmes in the retail sector The retailing is all around us. It permeates our lives. It is very obvious to buy products and services from their shop, their websites and their catalogue. There are plenty of procedures in which customers are attracted to buy from a certain store, one of which is the customer loyalty programme offered by them. The major reason for selecting this topic as my research subject is to gain an in-depth knowledge over it and resolve the questions rose on the topic customer loyalty programme. The approach to this dissertation will be to resolve the below questions. How does customer loyalty programme influence the retail sector What are the advantages of customer loyalty programme to the customers and retailers What are the measures that should be taken when implementing these programmes? How does these customer loyalty programmes affects the culture of retail chains and influence customers. The customer loyalty programmes are a concept adopted by the retail chains to attract their customer and retain them. These programmes are offered to provide customers with benefits over their purchase. Thus by the end of this research it would enable me to understand the benefits of the customer loyalty programme offered by the retail chains to their customers. The subject marketing communication has been a great interest to me, which cultivated a desire to opt my research into a topic of it. As we know that retail industry is at boom and the retail marketing strategy is a great concern for the retailers, I have opted for this area for my research which would enhance my knowledge on the subject. Review of Literature The nature of the customers does not possess an interest for loyalty. The only reason they purchase from a certain store is to satisfy their own needs. The style and presentation for the product and services from a business creates a response of customer loyalty. The only reason behind any purchase from any store is because the consumers desire to buy it. There is no compulsion to persistent purchase from any business. The consumer purchases are made from a certain store because they have a connection with them through offers made by products and services that appeal them. Consumers are self serving. Their main intention is to transact with a business that delivers them their desired needs. Consumer does not possess the characteristic of loyalty, it is the response from consumer to action to business, they are not inherently loyal or disloyal. The question should not be among the entire customer who is more loyal or why we dont possess much loyal customer. The question should be what are the ways in which we can retain our customers. The issue of customer loyalty is centred to business, not to the customers. Customer loyalty programme is the answer today as it has been in the past and will be in the future. This make the customer loyal and these loyal customers are easier to business with, are more predictable, and dont carry the expense associated with attracting new customers. Creating loyal customer by these programmes is considered as an answer to all the worries of retailer. A loyal customer has been an open option for any business to trade with. These customer loyalty programmes are at the common site for every consumer looking to satisfy its need. These programmes can be seen as Loyalty card holder schemes, Pay as you go scheme, buy now pay later schemes, etc. we can easily see all such programmes in any kind of retail store be it food, grocery, electronics, clothing, etc. Loyalty programmes have become an increasingly common part of retailers marketing strategies. Eventually, it was not uncommon for any business with an interest in a loyalty proposition to make an attempt at establishing its own variation. Following the financial crisis hundreds of stores ranging from corner shops to large department stores were forced to close their doors. But successful loyalty marketing allowed some companies to thrive and even expand. It can be noticed that the global competition in consumer market is rapidly getting intense and retailers and marketers are striving for the new strategies to maintain the interest and loyalty of their customers. Hence the associated marketing has grown in popularity since the past decades and the execution of associated marketing is slowly increasing (Noble/Philips 2004, P. 290). Presently retailers understood that satisfy and retain the customers with the usage of relationship building activity is one among the most potential form if sustainable competitive advantage. Though customer loyalty cannot be counted as the direct reason for profitability, various studies have found that profits for each year has been continually grown through custmners trust over the company and their continued purchases for every year (Meffert 2008, p.160; Noble/Philips 2004, p.290; Reinartz/Kumar 2000,p. 28) As merchant loyalty offerings began appearing in unprecedented numbers, loyalty programmes associated with just one retailer was no longer the rule. Consumption patterns have changed and consumers are becoming more frugal and discretionary in their spending. Major loyalty programme issuers know that customers are demanding increased flexibility and a wider variety of rewards. In a bid to survive many businesses experimented with cross-marketing; it is not uncommon to find ceramic ornaments offered through a hair salon loyalty card, or discounted health tests redeemable through a video rental chains membership programme. For many companies, the cross marketing of services is especially appealing as it removed the hassle of holding inventory for merchandise giveaways. A few years ago, the author of the Loyalty Paradox Report (Evans, 1999, P.4) criticised existing loyalty programmes for being mechanical, hard sell promotion, which overlooked the reason for repeat customers-emotions and trust, habit and inertia and communication and service. There is a danger that customers will be loyal to the programme itself rather than to the programme sponsor. It is clearly not sufficient to be an effective promoter of the economic benefits of loyalty programme participation. There is a need to offer consumer socio-cultural benefits, to provide the feel good factor that is missing from the shopping experience of other retailers (Burch, 2007). Burch also argues that it is the main reason why supermarkets are so keen to be perceived as a health promoting agency, a family friendly firm, and a household problem solver. As the manager of a Safeway (UK) store explained some years ago; Our success can be put down to our regard for our moral as well as our legal responsibilities (Cumming, 1994, P.5). For this reason, analysing the subtle mobilisation of consumer loyalty towards supermarket as an institution is as important as understanding the hard sell of loyalty programme activities and the negotiated supply chain partnerships. It is as both guide and guardian that supermarkets actively promote and regulate the social practices that underpin consumption behaviour. Contribution to Knowledge/Originality: The attractiveness of relationship marketing has progressively developed from the past few decades. To satisfy and retain the customer through relationship building is seen as the most sustainable competitive advantage adopted by the retailers. Though the customer loyalty cards are popular in the retail industry, many programmes of customer loyalty are almost transposable, with lack of attractiveness and differentiation. Thus it is essential to acknowledge the elements of customer satisfaction that relates to these programmes. Hence aiming towards the satisfaction of customers relates to understand and anticipate what consumer need from the loyalty programme. It is very common in retail to use the card based programs for loyalty enrichment strategy. These card based programmes issues special coded cards or special card that can be scan readable, those can be used at the checkout holding an objective to increase consumer tendency. Consumer gains few benefits on these loyalty card like reduction in price, percentage, gift pack service, own area for parking, etc. (Naslund 2002, p. 322). Loyalty cards are a common practice to offer in European retailing, after growing with 25 to 30 percent each year since 1990s. In some of the markets this card based programme has achived its saturation stage but in few it is still new process growing at a steady pace (Ziliani/Bellini 2004, p. 283f). Loyalty card Programs are the most admired relationship building activity in Australia. However, many loyalty card programme are almost transposable and customers dont use them (Hoffman/NaB 2007, p.6). There are numerous reasons why customers do not desire to bond in relation with retailer. Usually consumers dont sense the benefit those retailers offer are satisfactory or of no importance to them (Noble/Philips 2004, p. 300). In addition to this there is a lack of charm and delineation (Tomczak 2008, p. 325) Thus to offer suitable benefits to the customer, it is essential to understand the factors of customer satisfaction with the loyalty card programme. Focussing on the satisfaction of customer means to understand and anticipate what consumer desire from the loyalty program, through which a positive response is generate and posses the aptitude to astonish the consumer. The reason to opt for this study is to examine various attributes and recognise the major influential facto on consumer satisfaction. Methodology of Research The study will be based on the qualitative and quantitative approach. The primary source of data collection will be done by the questionnaire because it is said to be the least expensive procedure for the research (Trochim, 2002). The research forces me to investigate different retail chains that offers customer loyalty programmes to benefit the customer. Investigating on those retail stores will give me an elaborated idea over the benefits and drawbacks shared by the retailer and the customer through those loyalty programmes. The data collection sources will through book, journals, periodicals, news papers, articles, magazines, etc. The research will not limit itself with only reference of books and journal but as well extend its reach to gain the ideologies of the marketing experts and professionals working in the retail sector. The customer loyalty programme plays a vital role in enhancing a retail stores image by offering them benefits. Thus the focus of this research study will be on analysing the customers perception over these programmes and how does they view these loyalty programme. My main focus for the research will be to gain an overview towards the retail store, stating how these loyalty programs had benefited it. The qualitative approach will derive the perception of the respondents by using the tools as interviews and observation as this method believes in the opulence of data (Naslund 2002). Furthermore qualitative approach generates fresh idea and latest theory (McKenzie 2006). The conduction of interviews will be held to gain the views from the professionals working in retail industry and the marketing experts. The data collection will be done mainly through this area; Interviewing the professional working in the retail Industry Interviewing the managers working in the retail chains (sportsdirect.com, Marks Spencer, ASDA, TESCO, etc.) Discussing the subject with the professors of marketing Subject overview through collection of detailed data from books, journal, web sources, newspaper articles, etc. Observing and evaluating the previous research of different students on the topic and gathering information The analysing of data and information will be done through the following tools Diagrammatic Graphical presentations Flow Charts Anticipated Outcome The below are the anticipated outcomes of the study; The result of this study can be generalised to reflect the attitudes, perception and practices of a proportion of customers in the retail sector (UK) The research study will result in enhancing the knowledge on the customer loyalty programmes issued by retailers This research study will benefit the reader in describing the advantages and difficulties by customer loyalty programmes shared by both retailers and customers. Bungee jumping is based on an age-old ritual practiced by the ââ¬Å"land diversâ⬠of Pentecost island in the South Pacific archipelago of Vanuatu. Young men proved their courage by plummeting off giant towers. Every spring villagers there collect liana vines and wind them into long cords. The men then scale six story wooden towers, attach the vines around their ankles and jump. A successful leap is considered a demonstration of courage. In 1979, a bungee cord was incorporated with this tribal ritual. Members of the Oxford University's Dangerous Sports Club read about and designed a safe form of the practice. Atop the Golden Gate Bridge, dressed in tuxedos and top hats, the first form of bungee jumping came to existence. In 1987, bungee jumping moved to the American commercial scene.
